Fergus Pipe Band to Pipe in World’s Top Curlers in 2006 Grand Slam Event
November 16, 2006
The Fergus Pipe Band is pleased to announce its participation in The Home Hardware Masters of Curling Grand Slam Event to be held at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex November 29 to December 3, 2006.
Piping in eighteen of the best curling squads in the world, competing for the first Grand Slam title of the year, is yet another in a string of honours for the Pipe Band. In July 2006, the Fergus Pipe Band had the distinction of escorting 23 teams onto the field in the 2006 ILF Warrior World Lacrosse Championships in London Ontario.
“Playing in an event of this caliber is a true testament to the dedication and hard work of this band”, says Sean Geddes, Pipe Major. “Regularly piping at Bonspiels for The Fergus Curling Club, a major supporter of the band, we have more than our share of curling fans within our ranks. This is an exciting opportunity.” Given the fact curling draws its origins from late medieval Scotland, its only fitting to have the band start the festivities.
This year’s competition will see last year's Masters of Curling Grand Slam winner Randy Ferbey defend his title against 1995 world champion Kerry Burtnyk, Kevin Martin, Pete Fenson, Brad Gushue, and Jeff Stoughton. Rounding out the spiel are Glenn Howard, Pat Simmons, Pierre Charette, John Base, Don Walchuk, Mark Dacey, Kevin Koe, Bob Ursel, Jean-Michel Menard and Mark Johnson.
Featuring a purse of $100,000 this event is expected to draw thousands of spectators. The final will be broadcasted on CBC TV on Dec 3, 2006.
