Band members marched through the streets leading Tartan Day celebrants from pub to pub in downtown Fergus. The band played into each of the five pubs and stayed to play a few more tunes bringing the level of celebration at each venue up a few notches.
Fergus’ second annual Tartan Day celebration was organized by the Fergus Scottish Festival with the support of a number of sponsors.
Canada has been celebrating National Tartan Day since 1933. One day is set aside each year to honour the role of Scots in the early history of Canada. Ontario MPP Bill Murray put forward a private member's Bill in the Ontario legislature to adopt Tartan Day, which was passed on Dec. 19, 1991 with the unanimous support of all three political parties.
April 6th also marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath which was signed in 1320 written
to ask Pope XXII for Scotland's independence from England.
